Today people are not afraid to do business over seas and a fast growing field, is that of import-export or direct exporting. Many newcomers to the field wonder whether it is as exciting as it seems. This is really a rewarding and challenging career, one that will bring continued growth. There is no other career where a person is able to travel and learn a great deal about different products and people. This exporting goods field is exciting and challenging but there are trials and tribulations too.

People from all over the world work in import-export, in some form or another. And they can tell you that there are many constants that affect the industry, things like environmental aspects, cultural differences, and other things.

The success of a person in the import-export field depends on the product they sell, who they work with and what their financial capabilities are.

The Marketing End of Your Business
Depending on what you sell, you will have to market your product in a specialized manner depending on the country and their cultural beliefs. Every country requires different marketing techniques, and these are influenced by the customs of the culture and their ability to purchase the product.

International Commerce Laws
When you export, there are certain international commerce laws by which you will have to abide. These laws can be found by going to the exporting country’s trade commission, and they normally have a web site for you to consult as well.

When you are importing into a country then you have to follow that government’s policy for importations too. These will change depending on the country you are importing to and whether the product has any sanctions or is agricultural.

You can find these regulations on direct exporting on the countries trade commission site or in their offices. Most of these regulations are simple to meet and often don’t require more than you filling out a form and paying a small import fee.

Transportation
Here you will usually need to learn about different ways to send the product you are working with. You will have to learn which is the fastest and most expensive form of transportation, and which is the cheapest. There will probably be times you need to be creative and use methods that are somewhat unusual. There are some import-exporters who have used bus and even a taxi as a form of transportation to import or export a product.

When you own a business, or work in a business there is a huge amount of responsibility, and that responsibility intensifies in the import-export business and direct exporting. When you are successful in this field it is because you are open to change, traditions, and different customs and are willing to meet these customs and communicate your needs by any means possible. The importing goods field is vast and full of interesting tales and challenges.

I would like to emphasize the importance of personally visiting your suppliers in China. You may have heard that some consultants do not see the necessity to go to China at all. They suggest their clients order samples and place orders based on the results of their sample evaluation.

I strongly advise you against this and will explain why. My more than 25 years experience of importing goods from China has taught me otherwise.

Why Make the Trip?

There are of course some very large manufacturers in China with quality assurance organizations to guarantee a relatively consistent quality of products. With them, you can be more easygoing but chances are they cannot offer you the most competitive prices because of their bigger organization costs money. Often they have distribution channels in your home country making it less desirable to buy from them.

You will usually deal with smaller or medium size factories which need clear instructions from you and this is best done by meeting face-to-face. One of the issues working with a middleman or agency is that they may be knowledgeable about a variety of products, but not necessarily sufficiently experienced in any of them. In the end, there is no way of getting around the fact that the Chinese mentality favors frequent personal contact with overseas trading partners and visiting their factory is the way to go.

Be Prepared for Surprises

The smaller or medium size factories can usually offer you the most competitive prices and since you want to maximize your profit from importing, they will probably be your best partners.

By visiting your preselected factories, you can make your decisions about whom you want to strike a deal with after concluding your negotiations.

During your factory visits, you will be in for many surprises and you may have to revise the first judgment you arrived at from previous communication with some of the factories. You will find that some factories are smaller than expected and have only a limited production capacity available on their own premises. They do not want to miss out on your orders and hire a subcontractor to produce for them instead.

This is totally unacceptable because these subcontractors are usually inferior in quality management and care less about your orders because you are not their direct customer. If a factory has this policy, simply don’t work with them if you want to stay out of trouble.

The Importing Consultant

Another way you can achieve superior results is by employing a neutral company as your personal consultant. They have gained the needed understanding and knowledge to effectively deal with Chinese manufacturers and provide their service at an affordable cost. Simply send your requirements to them and they will have them executed in the best possible way. You also do not need to worry about inferior factories because they have ways avoiding them. You have to make sure that they have no special relationship with any factory to be sure that they will strictly follow only your instructions.
